Takedowns on Alibaba and Taobao: what western brands get wrong

The AliProtect and TaoProtect systems work, but they demand Chinese-language evidence and exact claim formatting. Most western filings fail on procedure, not merit.

Use the right portal

Alibaba group platforms run their own IP protection systems, separate from anything a marketplace in the US offers. Registration requires company documents and trademark certificates, and approval can take weeks. Start the account before you need it.

Registration jurisdiction matters

These platforms weight Chinese trademark registrations heavily. A US-only registration can still support copyright claims over photography, but trademark filings move much faster with a China registration certificate attached.

Evidence formatting decides speed

Complaints get rejected for blurry screenshots, untranslated documents, and mismatched product names. Clean side-by-side comparisons of genuine and counterfeit listings, with annotations, clear the review queue far more often.

Volume beats single filings

A seller with twelve infringing listings should get twelve linked complaints, not one. Platform risk systems respond to pattern evidence, and sellers with multiple upheld complaints lose their accounts rather than single listings.
